The iPhone 16 lineup, featuring the all-new Camera Control button, is finally here. This addition, highlighted during Apple’s 2024 Glowtime event, complements the advanced camera system and new Apple Intelligence features of the iPhone 16 lineup.
For those unfamiliar, the iPhone 16 Camera Control button not only gives you quick access to the camera but also lets you navigate its settings and access some of the Visual Intelligence features with simple gestures. Here’s how the iPhone 16 Camera Control button works and how to use it.
How does the iPhone 16 Camera Control button work?
Apple describes the Camera Control button as “a blend of hardware and software innovation” that allows seamless access to the Camera app, enabling you to take photos and videos while adjusting various settings effortlessly. It’s located on the lower right side of the frame and offers a new way to access and use the camera. What’s also nice is that the button is covered by a sapphire crystal, providing a smooth texture during use.
As noted by testers, Camera Control is button-like but feels like a touchpad. It combines capacitive touch for smooth interaction and pressure sensing for light press gestures, all with responsive haptic feedback.
All these features may make using the camera on the iPhone a lot smoother experience. And with the release of the iPhone 16 series just around the corner, you’ll be able to enjoy the addition in the coming days.
How to use the iPhone 16 Camera Control button
The iPhone 16 series Camera Control is quite intuitive, offering a range of camera functions that can be managed with simple gestures. While we haven’t got our hands on the latest iPhones ourselves yet, we have some ideas, thanks to various demos, for what and how you’ll be able to use the new button.
Quickly access the Camera app
With a single click on the Camera Control button, you can instantly launch the Camera app on the iPhone 16 series. This feature provides quick access to your camera, allowing you to capture moments effortlessly.
Take photos and videos
You can take photos and videos using Camera Control while the Camera app is open. To do that, click the Camera Control to snap a photo, or press and hold it to start recording a video.
Adjust camera settings
With your Camera app open, you can adjust camera settings using the Camera Control button like this:
- Light press twice on the Camera Control to open all the camera controls, including exposure and depth.
- You can slide your finger over the Camera Control to scroll through the options and light press to select one.
- Once you’ve selected a control, slide your finger to adjust the setting.
- To return to the main controls menu, just double-light press again.
Visual Intelligence with Camera Control
Later this year, Camera Control is getting Visual Intelligence features, allowing your iPhone to read photos and provide details about objects in them. For example, Apple showed a user pressing and holding Camera Control while pointing it at a restaurant. With another click on the Camera Control button, the iPhone pulls up the restaurant’s hours and rating instantly.
This feature makes it easier for your iPhone to automatically read objects in images and works with third-party tools like ChatGPT, letting you ask questions or perform related tasks.
