Is your Instagram feed suddenly flooded with sensitive and violent content? Well, it isn’t your fault. Sure, your Instagram feed is curated using the content you follow. Still, this sudden surge of graphic and sensitive content in your Reels feeds is due to an error in Meta’s recommendation algorithm.
While Meta has apologized for the mistake and said that it has fixed the error, many users are still encountering disturbing content in their feeds. Thankfully, Meta had recently introduced the ability to reset your algorithm, which we can use to get our feed on track.
Keep reading to learn how to reset your Instagram algorithm and what you can do to maintain a healthy Instagram feed.
How to reset the Instagram algorithm
The Instagram algorithm uses the past content you interacted with and the searches you made to build a tailored feed for you. This collected data ensures you are only served with the content that interests you. However, for times when you feel your Instagram feed is flooded with unwanted content, you can clear this data to reset the Instagram algorithm.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Open the Instagram app on your iPhone.
- Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the toolbar to access your profile.
- Here, tap the hamburger menu in the top-right corner.
- Now, scroll down to the What You See section and tap Content Preferences under it.
- Tap on Reset Suggested Content and follow the on-screen instructions.
Tips to maintain a healthy Instagram feed
Maintaining a well-curated Instagram feed ensures you get to interact only with meaningful content while avoiding distractions or negativity. Here’s how you can be on the front seat of your Instagram feed.
1. Unfollow accounts that don’t match your interest
The Instagram algorithm is heavily influenced by the accounts you follow to suggest content you might be interested in. If you’re seeing content you don’t like, it’s time to clean up your following list.
To do so, head to your Following list on profile page in the Instagram app and unfollow the accounts that don’t align with your interests.
2. Mute accounts instead of unfollowing
If you can’t unfollow someone to avoid real-world confrontation but dislike their content, you can mute their post and stories instead. This way, neither their stories nor their posts will appear on your timeline.
Here’s how you can mute someone on Instagram:
- Go to the of the person you want to mute.
- Tap the Following button, then select the Mute option in the drop-down menu.
- Now, flip the toggle next to the type of content you wish to mute on.
3. Engage with content you prefer
Instagram prioritizes the content you interact with. As such, you must start engaging more with posts that match your interests. To do so:
- Like, comment, and save posts from creators you enjoy
- Follow relevant hashtags related to your interests
- Watch Reels and Stories that align with your tastes
Over time, the Instagram algorithm will adjust your feed based on these interactions.
4. Mark unwanted content as Not Interested
Resetting your Instagram feed is useful when the app continuously spams you with content that doesn’t interest you. However, if such content doesn’t appear regularly but only occasionally, you can mark it Not Interested instead, and Instagram won’t recommend it again.
This is how you do it:
- Tap the three-dot button on the post you don’t like and select Not Interested.
- Additionally, you can tap Don’t Suggest Posts from [username] to prevent future recommendations from that account.
